There is this one story in the Old Testament, in the Book of Numbers, where the Israelites are in the wilderness and they turn away from Moses and God. As a result of this, they are attacked and bitten by hoards of fiery serpents. Succumbing to the venom of the serpents, the Israelites beg Moses to ask God for mercy.
